Senior Mechanical Engineer

Berlin, Germany (Hybrid) · Senior · Full-time

The role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead hardware design, optimisation, and scale-up as we transition from pilot deployment to (small) series production and multiple commercial installations. This role combines deep technical expertise in mechanical and process engineering with strategic ownership – you will drive hardware reliability, component optimisation, and manufacturing excellence while establishing engineering best practices that anchor our growing team.

You will set technical direction for containerised unit design, steer our external production partner, oversee commissioning and testing protocols, lead systematic improvement of component reliability and serviceability, manage integration of process and mechanical systems, and collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to deliver robust, field-proven deployments. Reporting to the management team and acting as a technical leader across the organisation, you will shape foom's hardware engineering standards and culture as we scale.

What you'll work on

  • Lead the design and optimisation of containerised production units, including detailed mechanical drawings, P&IDs, component specifications, mass/energy balances, and process control strategies
  • Design for efficiency, reliability and serviceability: optimise component selection, integration, and layout to ensure robust long-term operation and efficient field maintenance
  • Plan and oversee factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT), ensuring rigorous validation of hardware performance against specifications in both controlled and field conditions
  • Drive systematic hardware optimisation for cost and energy efficiency, throughput, durability, and product quality, translating findings into actionable design improvements
  • Execute data-driven root cause analysis on field issues and performance deviations, implementing solutions and establishing robust troubleshooting procedures
  • Build engineering standards and best practices across the mechanical and process engineering team
  • Collaborate with external engineering partners, equipment suppliers, and customer stakeholders to ensure long-term operational reliability and customer satisfaction

What you'll get

  1. Technical leadership role with clear ownership of containerised hardware design and scale-up
  2. Opportunity to build and mentor the mechanical and process engineering team as foom grows
  3. Direct collaboration with founders and executive leadership on critical hardware strategy decisions
  4. End-to-end involvement in designing and deploying a breakthrough technology across multiple customer sites globally
  5. Competitive compensation and equity stake aligned with senior technical leadership
  6. Work environment where engineering excellence, rigorous thinking, and hands-on problem-solving are deeply valued
  7. High-impact role in a climate tech venture addressing urgent global challenges

  • Proven track record in designing, optimising and scaling containerised, modular, or mobile systems, or industrial process equipment from pilot to commercial scale
  • Deep experience with mechanical design, component selection, CAD/FEA tools, and design for manufacturability and serviceability
  • Strong applied knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, process control, and integration of mechanical and process systems
  • Experience commissioning and troubleshooting complex hardware systems in field environments
  • Familiarity with bioprocessing, chemical process design, environmental technology, or industrial fermentation is highly valued

Mindset & leadership
